COULTER, Sarah May

According to oral family tradition Sarah May was pregnant and living in Ballarat around December 1854 when her husband Edwin fell down a mine injuring his leg.  They went to Geelong because they felt that trouble was brewing in Ballarat. In 1852 Sarah May had married Edwin Coulter at the Independent Congregational Church, Melbourne.  He was from Bedfordshire.  They moved to Ballarat where they pegged out four claims, one was said to be the site of the present Ballarat Town Hall.

Sarah and Edwin Coulter produced 10 children of which 2 died at a very young age.  Edwin died in 1882 aged 60 years, and was buried on 20th June at the Ballarat New Cemetery.  The location of his grave is unknown.  Sarah was buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery on the same day, 20th June, but in the year 1917 aged 86 years.  Her son Alfred is buried in the same grave.
